About the "inspiration" of so called "church fathers":
From where Hippolytus got it?

Hippolytus, Agaist Plato, On the Cause of the Universe
Another “Church Father,” Hippolytus (ca 170-236): "Against Plato"
1. And this is the passage regarding demons. But now we must speak of Hades, in which the souls both of the righteous and the unrighteous are detained. Hades is a place in the created system, rude, a locality beneath the earth, (...) And those who are so near hear incessantly the agitation, and feel the hot smoke. And when that vision is so near, as they see the terrible and excessively glowing spectacle of the fire, they shudder in horror at the expectation of the future judgment, (as if they were) already feeling the power of their punishment."

Interesting comment from Lon:

"Babylon taught about everlasting agony in Hades and this was the inspiration of some so called church father like Hippolytus

I don't agree with his view about Hades.

“But now we must speak of Hades, in which the souls both of the righteous and the unrighteous are detained…The righteous will obtain the incorruptible and unfading Kingdom, who indeed are at present detained in Hades, but not in the same place with the unrighteous (…) Thus far, then, on the subject of Hades, in which the souls of all are detained until the time God has determined; and then He will accomplish a resurrection of all, not by transferring souls into other bodies, but by raising the bodies themselves

On the following page you will see this segment on “MYSTERY BABYLON”. The links there will be live. (I don't think they are live here.) http://www.everlastingkingdom.info/article/150/favorite-articles-index.html

“MYSTERY BABYLON”: The “ancient mystery religion” of Babylon taught about everlasting agony in hades, hoping to paralyze the wicked pursuits of the populace. Similarly, it also emphasized the idea of instant gratification at the gates of heaven, and the eternal bliss of the “immortal soul”, to keep the oppressed pacified. Pythagoras, a pagan Greek, and then Plato (probably closet humanists) perpetuated these highly effective tactics, which soon spread thru the Roman Empire. From there the “mysteries” branched out into Hermeticism, Neoplatonism, and Gnosticism. “MYSTERY BABYLON”: quickly contaminated even the teachings of Yeshua (Jesus) the Nazarene, which in essence remains the resurrection of mysticism—Neoplatonism and Hermeticism—calling itself Christian. Later the Arab adaptation became Sufism and Shiism. The same mysteries were also spread by the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons. In fact the Mysteries were almost universally accepted until they began being replaced by Darwinism. The following links identify the most easily recognized MARKS of “MYSTERY BABYLON”,condemned in the Revelation 17.
1) Do you have an immortal soul?
2) Heaven, will we go there?
3) NEW Soft on Hell?

Eze 18:4  Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Eze 18:20  The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
